When it comes to choosing new designer radiators for your living space, the way they look will play a big part in which ones you choose.

Whether you’re looking for a sleek, stylish and contemporary designer radiator to complement the overall design and décor of your room, or a colourful modern vertical designer radiator to become the room’s main focal point, there are several factors which you need to consider.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting a designer radiator to look great and give your guests something to talk about. However, it’s important to remember that your radiator, first and foremost, is a functional item that is there to keep you nice and toasty on those long, cold nights.

So, the size of your radiator, and also how warm it makes your room, should be two things to consider when choosing your perfect designer radiator.

Here are our top tips to help you make the right decision:

Radiator sizing rule of thumb

In order to make your room as energy efficient as possible, it’s important to work out the heat output it requires, then choose the number and size of designer radiators you need accordingly.

As a general rule of thumb, you’ll need to work out how big your space is by multiplying the length, width and height of its walls. Once you know how big the room is, you should install one radiator for every 5m³ of space you need to heat. Sometimes, having two (or more) smaller radiators instead of one big one can be a more efficient way of doing things.

How much heat do I need?

There are several factors which can affect how much heat output is required form the designer radiators you choose. These include room dimensions, insulation quality and any additional heating sources.

Radiator heat output is measured in British Thermal Units (BTU) and working out how many BTUs your room needs can be quite complex. The easiest way of working out how much heat you need from your designer radiators is to use our simple BTU calculator, which will help you to decide how many you need and the best place to position them.

Choosing your perfect designer radiator

Once you’ve determined heat output and size required for your designer radiator(s), the next step is to choose the design. It’s worth bearing in mind here that different rooms have different heating needs, but also have different design requirements. For example, one of our fantastic horizontal designer radiators would be perfect for a living room or hallway, but may not work as well in your bathroom or kitchen, where a vertical designer radiator may be a better bet.

Likewise, if you’re looking to add a real wow factor to your living space, then a made-to-order art glass radiator with a custom design is a safe bet.
