How can I make my radiators more energy efficient?

3 Practical steps to drive down your energy bills and deliver more efficient central heating.

Increasing global gas prices are skyrocketing household heating bills

Record increases in global gas prices have resulted in the energy price cap rise from 54% in April to a record-breaking £1,971 per year. Wholesale gas has increased 335% in the past 12 months, and with 85% of UK households heated by gas boilers, this means most home owners are to pay significantly more for their heating this winter. Last winter was the coldest April in the UK since 1922, if this year’s winter follows suit, it could get very expensive.

Wondering how to cut your central heating energy bills?

If you want to save on gas bills you need to make sure your radiators are as energy efficient as possible. Here are three quick ways to check your current central heating system and radiators are running efficiently.

1 - When did you last bleed your radiators?

Air inside your central heating system has a negative impact on the efficiency. Using a radiator key, you can easily bleed each radiator to ensure trapped air within the system is removed. Removing air enables the heat to be distributed as evenly and efficiently as it can be. Trapped air can lower the efficiency of heat distribution, leaving you with a radiator with cold spots and can cause oxidation, which can permanently damage your radiators.

2 - When did you last clean your radiators?

Dust on the radiator can also act as an insulator, reducing the heat output - so keeping radiators clean and dust free is also essential. Radiators naturally accumulate dust, one deep clean a year to remove accumulated dust from the radiators itself, and the wall behind, will enable your air flow to be unimpeded.

3 - Do your radiators have good airflow?

If your radiators are a bit of an eyesore, and you've tried to hide them with a radiator cover or placed a large furniture piece in front of them - such as sofas - this can significantly impact on the heat output efficiency. If any of your radiators are covered, the heat cannot flow effectively. If the heat can flow freely, you won't need to keep your heating on for as long as, it will heat the space much faster.

Maybe a replacement radiator on interest free credit is the answer?

If you're using old style radiators, now might be the time to swap them out. Apart from the natural build-up of silt, sludge and rust which are likely to degrade the efficiency of a radiator over time, - old radiators typically aren't as energy efficient as new ones. This may be down to the materials used, the design of the thermal flow, or a build-up of paint layers impairing the heat output. Agadon Designer Radiators are built to the highest quality standards, have exceptional heat efficiency and with interest free credit available - may offer a solution you’ve not considered.
